I was greatly impressed with all the info in your web site. I read it almost all; I checked out all the symptoms, and I have currently about 38, and I have had about 7 more in the past. How can I be sure if I have [WTS] or not? Is there any other way to detect it other than the symptoms? Can this condition be treated with Armour Thyroid? God Bless! Armando F.

Dear Armando, The treatment is the test. In medicine this is known as a therapeutic trial. Thyroid blood tests are often normal. There is no test that can show whether you will or will not respond to treatment. The diagnosis is a diagnosis of exclusion, meaning that your doctor will try to rule out other explanations for your symptoms. Of all the possible diagnoses that can explain these terrible complaints, WTS may be the best one to have since it's so treatable and reversible. Good luck, Denis Wilson, MD

The information you offer is very important to me. I suffer with fibromyalgia and CFS but have never agreed with the diagnosis. I am a Type I, but have suffered depression and trauma for a great part of my life. My question is: If 98.6 is normal, what is considered low temperature that would indicate Wilson's Syndrome? I have not been able to find this info anywhere in your web info. Thank you, Rita M.

Dear Rita, I have seen patients improve when their temperatures went up to 98.6 from 98.2 or 98.4. A few tenths of a degree can make a difference. But normally the temperature isn't just a little low, it's quite low, classically 97. 8 or lower. Some patients temperatures are in the 95's and I've seen patients with temperatures as low as in the 93's. Kind regards, Denis Wilson, MD

Can a person have most of the symptoms of Wilson's Syndrome but also with weight loss, difficulty gaining weight, and undigested food in the stool? Loni

Dear Loni, Yes, sometimes low temperatures can contribute to digestive problems and difficulty gaining weight. By the same token, people can have digestive problems that strain their system and contribute to the development of WTS. If your doctors can't find a good explanation for your medical problems and you have a low temperature, then you might consider improving your temperature and see what kind of a difference it makes for you. Warmly, Denis Wilson, MD
