Question: Have you seen people who met all of the characteristics of WTS except they were too skinny and could not gain weight? It seems like everyone is concerned about losing weight. Some people need to gain it, but the thyroid numbers are normal, metabolism seems overly active, and yet all other WTS symptoms are dominant. Of course I have seen my medical doctor who is also trained in naturopathy about this. And yes of course he is confused. I just wondered if you have seen this type of patient and if they responded to WTS products.

Definitely, we have seen patients with WTS who were skinny and could not gain weight, and were able to gain weight once their temperatures normalized. Apparently, in them, their low temperatures resulted in malabsorption of their food that prevented them from gaining weight. Best wishes, Denis Wilson, MD

Hi. I have taken t-3 for many years and the insurance-Aetna will not be covering any compounds in October. I am trying to wean down slowly. My ultimate goal was to eventually get off anyways. 1) How long do I have to be off the t-3 compound to start regular levothyroxine? 2) Will my body temperature tell a true picture of my thyroid level? 3) I should have thyroid levels checked--how long will it take after being off t-3 to tell? I have a Dr who is familiar with hormones, etc., but not compound t-3. Thanks for your suggestions. Diane M.

Dear Diane, Your doctor can call 800-420-5801 to get free technical support regarding your case. Depending on the individual case, some patients may not need to go back on levothyroxine (T4) after T3 therapy. However, patients will not be able to maintain a normal temperature if they do require some form of thyroid hormone support. Patients that do need thyroid support do not necessarily have to be off the T3 completely before they can begin adding back or transitioning back to T4. Though tests and T4 can be started once it's clear the temperature will not hold on its own, if the temperature does hold then tests might be obtained after about 6 weeks, but may take as long as 3 months to normalize completely. Again, your doctor can call for a free consultation. Warmly, Denis Wilson, MD

If a person has had the thyroid surgically removed and has been on Synthroid for many years, would this program still be an effective one, especially if the body temperature usually runs between 96 and 97 degrees? Betty G. North Carolina

Yes, absolutely, the approaches we recommend might prove extremely helpful to people who've had their thyroids removed and are on thyroid medicine. Cheers, Denis Wilson, MD
