I have been treated for years by different alternative health care practitioners using a variety of modalities for functional hypothyroidism. Each one would work for about six months. Then all my symptoms would return: tremendously painful periods (including vomiting), tremendous fatigue, fogginess, forgetfulness, adult acne, dry skin, hair loss, low sex drive, constipation etc... MD's could never detect it clinically via blood tests but it was always checked because of my symptoms and family genetics (almost everyone in my family on both sides have some sort of clinical thyroid issue). I was referred to an MD out here in CA in 2001 and my life changed. I told him everything I had been going through for 20+ years plus brought him in years of thyroid blood panels. He looked at me and in an instant told me I was not crazy. He explained that there is a condition named Wilson's Syndrome and I was a classic textbook case. He put me on T3 and voila my life changed within days and still years later I am so grateful to him. Due to many life circumstances and the stress I live under, occasionally I need to take a quick round of T3 or ThyroCare. I can tell even without knowing my temperature when the problem has kicked in (which I verify anyway with the thermometer). Each and every time the T3 and/or ThyroCare works and within 24 - 32 hours I am a brand new woman. I knew my brother had this too, yet he would not believe me. On a visit a couple of years ago I followed him around with a digital thermometer. Following him was not very difficult as he was mostly a couch potato because of severe lethargy. His temp ranged from 96.0 - 96.2. Finally at the end of the four day visit when he looked at his temperatures he conceded. I referred him to a WTS doctor in Connecticut and within months he was feeling so much better. Now he has a second lease on life and still to this day he thanks me for helping him. I am taking ThyroCare for just about three weeks. I am seeing a rise in my temperature. Hopefully, it is doing the trick!! My temp this morning was 98.0 and before taking the ThyroCare my temp was under 97. Sincerely, Debbie R

I have been on several cycles of WT3 treatment, and while I did not receive relief from my pains or the fatigue (which at times are both severe), I do not get quite as cold as I used to before, plus that was the only time my cholesterol was in completely normal range. I have been off of T3 for about three months now and the cholesterol is out of this world (6.94 in Canadian measurements), and my doctor wants me on cholesterol-lowering medication. I have the same constitution my mother had and she ended up experiencing every side effect of those medicines and that really scares me. I am a 58 year old female and have been a total vegetarian for most of my life. I do not consume dairy or eggs either. Would staying on a steady dosage of the same strength of the T3 for a prolonged period of time be beneficial to keep that pesky cholesterol in it's place? Thanks for your suggestions, G.P., Alberta, Canada

Dear G.P., Certainly T3 can have a huge bearing on cholesterol levels, and some patients enjoy staying on T3 for prolonged periods of time. In some cases, the maintenonce dose they take can be lower than the dose they were taking during cycles. The WT3 therapy is usually cycled because sometimes subsequent cycles are able to accomplish what previous cycles were not. When people get some benefits from the WT3 protocol but not all, or, when they relapse after the treatment is over, It's at least possible that subsequent cycles might bring more benefit than previous ones. Another factor to consider is how optimally do you feel you and your doctor administered the WT3 treatment in the first 3 cycles. I know I've had patients where we didn't do the treatment quite correctly for the first few cycles, and then they received more benefit when we did better on subsequent cycles. If you have any questions about the protocol, your doctor may call 800-420-5801 to make an appointment for a free consultation on your case. You may also want to look into herbal support you could try: Cholesterol Care, Thyroid Px, and / or ThyroCare. Warmly, Denis Wilson, MD

Would moderate consumption of coffee, such as 1/2 mug a day, be detrimental to those following the WT3 protocol?

Here is an excerpt from Chapter 13 of the Doctor's Manual: Alcohol, caffeine, and smoking can influence proper T3 therapy because they can influence body temperature patterns, and it is generally best to avoid these substances during treatment. There is, however, no direct chemical interaction with thyroid hormones and alcohol, caffeine, and smoking. But since the side effects of caffeine, smoking, and alcohol can be similar to the side effects of thyroid hormone therapy, their effects can be additive. Best wishes, Denis Wilson, MD

If I already have low thyroid and suffering from depression and feeling cold, would WT3 help instead of taking synthroid, which actually makes me gain weight? Thanks

WT3 certainly might help. Many people with low thyroid function that don't do well on T4-containing medicines like Syndthroid can do fabulously well on the WT3 protocol. It's possible to suffer from hypothyroidism and Wilson's Temperature Syndrome at the same time. Sincerely, Denis Wilson, MD
